i've got the day off from bowls tomorrow (wednesday) - it'll be weird because i won't play again til the Rose Bowl on Saturday - 5 whole days off in a row.
I don't get my trophy until october sometime :-( but rest assured i will post a bloody great big picture of it :-)

thats about it at the moment, it's 1:20, and while its still quite early for me - i am knackered and about to go to bed.

EFX2 update
for details on the situation regarding efx2 check out www.kingofankh.co.uk - he has transcripts of emails from Keith.
In essence Keith hopes this is a temporary situation (5-8weeks) he hopes efx2 and us are back in business in some shape or form at some point, altho not with the previous and now compromised script.
King is also pimping a subscription by email service - this is limited to people with layouts that allow widgets (i don't have one of those, so utilising my rss or atom feed in google is as good as it gets)

WOZZA IS A CHAMPION
I won the handicap title at Bounds Green this afternoon in a thrilling encounter - the match finished with me winning out.
Wozza 21 - 26 JS
JS needed 27 points and i beat him utilizing my handicap, i was behind in the match for long periods, but always intouch with the handicap rate.
My handicap for next season is going to be 8, rather than this years 4. My win also means i am automatically entered into something called the Lonsdale Trophy which is a prestigious regional invitation only competition.
I am really chuffed, thanks to all the bloggers who have supported me this season - it was a popular win in the clubhouse too, i got a lot of pats on the back and many compliments how i had conducted the shot chase and my level of skill under pressure.

A Wozza Night Out

a nights ago yours truly ventured into central London for a party (moi?, surely not i hear you ask..........)
and whats more it was a Superheroes Vs Supervillains party, in a Bier Hall on Old Street. I was going to be a 1930's mobster but - i could not find a violin case for effect, and my good black fedora hat blew off down a train tunnel never to be seen again, so i just had a smart retro suit on and red tie. Ho-hum, not many others were in costume tho.
Cracking night which ended at the Borderline nightclub in soho on possibly it's worst music night of the week, but hey-ho enough other people seemed to enjoy.

and what pisses me off isn't that i lost my content - it's the fact we have to rebuild our little close knit community all over again. Many seem to be here (i willlink you all as soon as i can get this figured out again).

Iraq - um, a little help here

this long ago stopped being anything remotely like a military problem.
It's now generational and societal - no, silly me, it's millennial between the sunni and the shia.
They have been at each others throats (minus saddams reign) for the last couple of thousand years. We lifted the lid on the pressure cooker - and for the sake of saving face(?) we have to stay.

The Powell doctrine was fine - we can fix water pipes, rebuild buidings, turn on electricty - thats what we broke. We did not start the civil war - we had the chance in the months after Baghdad fell, before the foreign fighetrs arrived and before Sadr had national profile to stop it from happening. We failed - miserably. But that is not the same thing as having started it.

This is not one of those problems we can fix with our troops hanging around being picked off. We need Iran and Syria to help prop up the government in Iraq if we are to stem (at best) the violence - that won't be stopped except via miracle.

Will this be a conflagration that stains us and the world for generations?, yes - the only question is how bad it is. There are millions displaced internally, hundreds die on a single day already of violence alone, little electric and little running water - guns and angry men everywhere.

I'm open to suggestions -all of us should be- but i am sick of tired of hearing "we can't lose face", the media is (helping) losing the war, stay the course, we can't talk to the neighbours.
What it seems to boil down to (again) is the media are losing the war by not hiding the truth from us, and we can't afford to lose face as name taking asskicking sons of bitches.

Would our troops return home in disgrace?, really? - No. Majorities of the public in all coalition nations realise the militaries have outstayed their welcome in Iraq and that there is no clear plan for victory(what ever that means), that the troops are over stretched and have an impossible job (ill defined as it is) remaining ahead of them.

One of my yankee-expat friends has heard yesterday that her brothers Tour in Iraq has been extended. Again.

We are on the verge of breaking both (US and UK) militaries, and the job is getting harder in Afghanistan (talked about, much?).

Tenor of the last sweary post (now deleted) - was that people who were prepared for war with Iran and didn't want our hostages home should be ashamed of themselves.

i got a little carried away. but this gets me very emotional, we have our people back - people held against their will for almost 2 weeks, some of whom were hived off in solitary confinemnet.

I don't care if 13 of the 15 were on Iranian TV - i just don't, some poeple see it as a blight on the British People and that the Royal Navy is now a laughing stock. I just don't see it that way - the primary loyalty of each of our personel held hostage was to each other, to make sure they all survived. Who knows what the 13 were told would happen to the other 2 if they did not co-operate?

But there is a pro-war agenda at work here - and it is America's and taht of their shills - turn on Fox News, listen to the Limbaughs and O'Reillys and Kristols - they didn't care about our people - they wanted to know how they could push their agenda. Now that our people are free the shit is hitting the fan, Tony Blair is now "French", the Royal Navy a laughing stock and the UK is to be seen as a shivering wreck on the toe of Iranian opression. Whats the only cure for all these ills?, well, war (of course, what else?). We were not firm enough with Iran, we capitualted, our people in the field our cowards and our navy a joke. We are taking that from our Ally - remember the one which praised us so highly, the one we have sacrificed dozens of our dead for. The one we have sacrificed our national security for, the one we have isolated ourselves from Europe for.

With Friends like that, who needs enemies?

Lords Reform

i don't think an elected second chamber, if conventions were carried over or if there were written rules would threaten the commons.

I'm off reservation with the Left - but I'll come to that in a minute.

Lords reform can not take place without Commons electoral reform - full stop. (minus getting rid off the remaining hereditarys).

The Commons is almost a dictatorship with a party holding substantially less than a majority of the electorate pushing through what it wants by pay-roll vote. First past the post worked when there were two parties sharing 90+% of the vote - it doesn't work now.

If the Commons were more reflective of the country as a whole then we can look at lords reform.

This is where people on the left and other liberals and I diverfe... if the second chamber is going to be utterly subordinate (which i don't see changing) what is the point of creating a new electoral layer?

If it comes straight off a party list the candidates will be washed up council leaders, power hungry councillors, grandees and the like - no real people will get in which is a shame. I think the make up of the commons at the moment is fairly diverse (teachers, cab drivers, lawyers, doctors, farmers, ex military).
A purely revising chamber would not attract anyone with life experience outside of politics or public services or unions.

If it is to remain a revising chamber - and if the candidates likely to fill it are sub-par then don't elect the place.

A panel elected by the commons on the basis of the Speakers elections would do a good job of appointing (bypassing the executive) Heads of charity's, scientists, media experts, agriculturalists, ex-generals, community figures, and a mix of party political figures who will form the rump of spokesmen and representatives of the commons view. The non-party affiliates would operate under the same cross bencher mentality as they do now.

The Lords Science And Technology committee is revered world wide, the Lords Committee on Europe does brilliant work on resolving our white papers with European law and such. These great resources would disappear if no-hope elected hacks took the roost.

I don't like where I've come out on this issue, my heart says we should elect - but my head says that if the chamber is purely revisionist in it's mandate it should be full of the experts and professionals qualified to comment with personal or communal authority.

Cruddas under fire, "Supporters Networks"

Jon Cruddas has been on the campaign trail trying to re-energise the base of the abour party and persuading the high-ups to return to trying to create a mass membershoip party - rather than appealing to the two/three hundred focus grouped votes in the hyper-marginals.

For his efforts Jon has been called a potential "disaster" - her is why......

because the upper echelons of the party hate the grass roots and don't want any semblence of a membership based organ to remain.
The plan from the top on down - is to create "supporters networks" in Health, Education, Crime, Social Exclusions etc who will be mail shotted monthly with what New Labour are doing and how it helps them.These supporters are told to encourage their friends with "similar interests" to look at what New Labour is doing for them.

They are trying to Strip back the central membership moddel and transfer it into a loose american=party style of alligned interest groups.

The disaster is that he is attempting to salvage a mass membership organisation based on working class values when what the leadership wants is the loose affiliations of "supporter networks" that Blears put her name to when the last lot of NEC voting forms came around.

New Labour, Bad Campaigning and Blairs Military kick

my local labour councillors, who i like a lot - almost lost my vote last time out because of the "soft on crime" bumkins that came through my door.

Liberal people (who the Labour party are hemorrhaging) do not respond well to being told that the opposition is more liberal than the people canvassing you about the dangers of liberalism...... it is in effect negative campaigning against yourself.

IE, if i recieved a note saying the Liberal Democrats opposed ID cards and biometrics, i would run out and vote Lib-Dem instead of the soft-right or hard right labour candidate.

If Labour puts up a strong anti-war/anti-newlabour local candidate in my constituency next time out this will be back to being a marginal (currently lib-dem by 2000).

Many on the left i know who switched last time out will not be corralled back into a hard-right authoritarian New Labour party with threats and intimidation of impending Liberal Doom.

Blairs Trident Renewal

New Labour, for that read Britains right wing governing party - are to renew our Nuclear Deterrence -well, not quite.
They intend to renew the sea based nuclear deterrence, well, again, lets be more specific. New Labour intends to replace Britains submerged nuclear deterrent to a cost of closing £30bn - with maintainince over the life time rising to £75bn.
Who are we going to hit?, we can't launch them preemptively, we can't hit a single terrorist training camp or a downtown towerblock with one - particularly if the terrorists plotting to attack us are in Hamburg or Luton.
Who are the nations that might cause threat?, immediately its Iran (debatable as the nuclear ability) and North Korea, who may have 2-3, all trained at Hawaii.

Unable to come up with a credible threat from a nation state Blair talks of rogues and terrorists - leaders of rogue egiemes are jsut that, a clique of a thousand - against whom we would send a nuclear weapon 100 times as powerful as Hiroshima or Nagasaki?.

Why would us having these weapons keep us any safer?, i see no reason for it - if we MUST, and i doubt it, keep a detterence the aerial capabillity or the surface to surface, sea to shore cpabillity we retain should be more than suffiecient. But Blairs answer?, they may all be taken out simultaneously and we couldn't get a strike off. If every ship in the british navy was sunk, f every attack aircraft we had was destroyed on the ground, if every bunker was destroyed - that is the contingency we are basing this £75bn gamble on?.

We have troops who's guns will not fire, we have ammunition sent to the front that is duff, we have a shrinking airforce, Navy and armed ground forces. We can not find the money to get the army a decent assault rifle but we can find the money to buy submarines and new nuclear warheads.
Maintaining surface to surface nuclear weapons is an option, as is refitting our current non-trident sub force, as is a retro fitting a long range bomber - but none of those will be given time in PArliament. With that, the Tories will line up with New Labour for the most part, some Liberals will go that way too, and we will spend £75bn over 30 years. The futility of it all, and the gutless way the Labour Backbenchers are caving into the the threat of not getting another job (or the "terror threat"). New Labour MPs are the biggest scum in the universe, they have consistently voted for the stripping of the rights of British Citizens, they have voted to give the murderous police any powers they wish - they are cowardly and have their tummys tickled once per session to keep them sweet. They are, as a group, thuggish and not open to any idea not from the Prime MInisters arse.

I understand the Tories and the Liberals, but New Labour are truly the worst of the bunch.

Blair gets away with it every bloody sodding time - but i don't blame him, i blame the supine, bend over back benchers and payrollers who without question vote for whatever half arsed lazy piece of nonsensical garbage comes out of the Number 10 policy unit.

My contempt for the Labour Backbenchers who have not once stood up to be counted is without parralell. These cowards sit there anonymously screwing British industry and our soldiers and the wider public by any means possible, and they do not even read half of what they vote for.
The bell rings and like Pavlov's dogs the trained response sends them through the lobby.

FPTP and The Broad Church

first post here for years, as i had no-where else to put it.

The reason we and the USA have "broad church" parties is because of our electoral systems.

With our twin first past the post systems it is very difficult for any new parties to form and obtain electoral success that 7-10% in a PR system would denote.

If there was a "socialist" party, a "liberal" party, a "center left" and "center right" party and a "far right" party - along with the greens and communists i think you would see both LAbour and the Tories becoming very much less broad church parties if not dissapearing completely.

There would be a similar situation in the USA, there would be a leftish party, many conservative parties and a couple of broadly centerist parties.

I class myself as a "labour" person - but if there was a socialist candidate with a chance of winning i would vote for them.

We are at the stage where all major parties in FPTP systems are broad church marriages of convenience - there are many people willing to put up with aspects of the New-Labour programme in order to have the minimum wage and extra health spending for example.

i promised someone a run-down of some of the views i take on some things:

I don't like abortion, but it isn't my choice to make as a man, and it should be an option for women who are at risk or can't cope. TO deny that is to sentence women, and the unborn to backstreet clinics with no rules, no hygeine and then women die, or are left in agony for life, and many times unable to concieve ever again.

I think every life is precious thats why i oppose the death penalty, and i don't class a divided nucleus as human life.

The Right wing in America who would deny women the right to a safe abortion, even as a life saving measure for the mother, also seek to deny prospective mothers any pre-natal healthcare. The lack of pre and post natal healthcare and education in America, as a result of anti-government bigotry is one of the crimes of our time. Women who have to work minimum wage, with no benefits, and no healthcare until almost 9months are given no help, no scans no preporatory care, and after the birth while the child might have a minimal level of checks healthcare is not actively given.
America ranks 42 in the world in Child Mortality, that is below Cuba, accroding to the american governments own figures.
These conservatives who are intent on letting every child be born then do not care one jot about the poor unfortunates, the mothers have to go straight back to work, they can't afford diapers, baby medicines or formula. Is it any wonder that all these children, who might well be born healthy are dying?.

They support the rights of the foetus, not of the child. They really have to decide what is more important, fighting "communist" healthcare proposals or keeping children alive longer than they can in the developing world.

The image of the Katrina disaster that struck home with me was a news crew finding a young mother with a baby who was on oxygen and a monitor. The mother and child were trapped and unable to leave New Orleans, because she had had to sell the car to pay for the babies healthcare. And because she wasn't insured the hospital would not take the child to evacuate it.
I would submit that a hospital in Bangladesh or thailand would have taken in that child and its mother, because in places with even fledgling healthcare systems the health of a patient, and not the health of the insurance companies bamk balance is what determines treatment

ok, most poeple who regularly read my shit know i'm a Rocker, torn denims, leather jacket, axl rose bandana, the whole works.............. its how i unwind, going to clubs and rocking out (muchly)
i even ran the door at londons premier Classic Rock club for a year, and i'm tight with the DJs. I have saxon, anthrax, aerosmith and motely crue cds and dvds.
sooooo........ today.......in HMV....... i buy......... Norah Jones - Come Away With Me..... i won't lie, i've had a few of her trax on MP3 for a lil' while............. but buying a cd?, of Norah Jones.......?, and i'm enjoying it.............. (for the most part..... "Shoot The Moon" is utter rubbish for example)..... but the rest of it is pretty damn fine.
Its soooooo relaxing, i'm sitting here at 3:20am, with a glass of wine, Norah Jones and my blog and all seems right with the world. I love her voice, its so calm, so melodic
If you read my last post, you'll know Rock isn't my only bag, for example i'm well into that strange cover of the Joy Division song (http://blog.efx2.com/user/wozza/2959/view/12110/)...... and i have experimental jazz, delta blues, electronica, old school hip hop, i've got some pretty left field euro-funk too and some excellent punk stuff....... but theres a theme..... all that stuff...... to music wankers... is cool. And i despereately avoid chart cd's pretty much like the plague. Aside from my glaring Bon Jovi and poodle rock collection i think i have a pretty decent collection. Since i've started thinking about it that is, in my early teen years there were some shockers that will never see the light of day again.
So i guess, my question is, am i starting to lose it?, am i now on the inevitable slippery slope to the middle of the road?, wil i one-day find myself picking up the Jamie Cullum or Dido albums?.................... i hope not..... but i guess i'll just have to keep everyone informed.

abstinence in the fight against aids.......

I've just expended much angst on anoither blog, so i'll try and make this one sound fresh.

i don't play hard and loose on my facts, everything i say can be backed up, i just don't choose to link to info when i get going into a rant. BTW, my sources for info are not books by Michael Moore or on the other side (wrong side) Ann Coulter.

Abstinence education, favoured by the christian cultural conservatives in the USA, and being marginally touted in your motherland now. But like most of the things you try and cling onto in the name of "culture and heritage", guns and the death penalty spring to mind.......... it doesn't actually work.

Over 50% of american parents favor abstinence based sex ed for their kids. But the mannerin which it is taught in many schools, particularly in the south raises huge concerns for the greater welfare of everyone. Young adults, particularly in church groups/school sex led lead by religious concerns are being taught that condoms are not the 99.999% safe that it has been repeatedly proved they are, but somewhere in the 80% safe region. CLearly thats scare mongering. This is totally set aside from the extra-extra curricular abstinence ed, with the silver band promises.

They are ineffective at best. Teens are horny........ its when they are in their adolessence, they experiment like it or not. None of the abstinence only programs studied in one survey were judged effective. The rates of unwanted pregnency and of STDs are higher in the abstinence only groups, because there are NO warnings about going outside of abstinence. SOme of the teaching is still at the you can pick up AIDS from a CPR dummy stage, and that just has to be quashed.

The unproven, at best, abstinence message is now, and has for some time now, been made a massive part of the US foreign aid schemes to sub-saharan africa and orther aids endemic areas. Its all very well, and it isn't, telling women "hey, just don't put out and we'll solve this thing"........ rates of rape are endemic in southern africa. Womens lib and the whole equality thing passed a lot of that area by, you because of the whole apartheid thing being a slightly bigger issue.
Wives are treated as property to be used in whatever manner the man suggests....... she can not refuse hime without penalties from her community.

Much of this aid is DEPENDENT on "abstinence only" or "abstinence plus" education being the methods used by the group recieveing the aid...... many of which are Missionary groups in al but name.

There needs to be an entire rethink and re-education of the male populations in AIDS endemic areas. If you can get this generation of boys to think sensibly and respectfully about women and sex there is a hope, if all you are trying to do is tell the kids with kalashnikovs in jungle clearings "don't have sex" the enterprise is pretty much doomed.

I had an entry at modblog full of bile and vitriol directed at the peole advancing the abstinence projects in the UK, hand in hand with the Alpha course................. i might have a copy of that, i hope i do. Its worth reading, to confirm prejudices on both sides, and to be grossed out by some language. Words like "man meat" and "30th percentile of body to body interaction".

if i could sum up my mood in one word that would be it, falafels.

I don't know why its that word, but its the one in my head at the moment. I'm tired, having a glass of wine, and just finished my HTML fiddling, the black and orange is cool - well i think so.

I've been trying to eat sensibly for a few days, and suceeded, 1 biscuit and no fizzy pop for three days. Well, tonite i had an excuse to have a burger, a lil bit of choccy and some pop, i went to the footy. YAY. Arsenal won 3-0 against Reading. (pronounced Redding for my non english peaking audience (americans and the like)).

I'm going to try a lil bit more fiddling with the default template before i try and move on again.

I just checked modblog, and its still down, they haven't even bothered to update the notice since last week.

I might start posting a couple of rants again, but with piss all poeple reading whats going on here i'm gonna have to motivtate myself. On modblog i had around 60 people a day passing through, some leaving comments, others a "hi, hows things". Blogspot, and the rest, just seem less personable.

Myspace is reciveing a post too, but i don't quite know what yet.

modblog has been down every time i have checked in the last 24hrs.

i'm peeved, because i had a good thread running on my last post and its difficult to keep good ones fresh..

I might as well say i managed to get up at 10am this morning, since i've been sleeping well into the after noons. In my defence i was getting to bed at about 5/6/7am, so getting up at 3 in the afternoon isn't soooo bad. (i think anyway).

I have to price check some items online for a cuple of peeps.

Watched WWE Raw last night, well ok i didn't i taped it and went to bed at 2am. I Thought steve austin was a little ott, but then again when isn't he?

I had my usual cup of java and a pastry for breakfast (a-boo-yah). I really should start to cut down on that.
Saw a Kim Possible yesterday i hadn't seen before, theone with the Moodulator, i was in stitches, its the funniest show on teevee. Rufus is my hero (ok coming from a 23 year old bloke that might sound weird, but hey, its a naked molerat, whats cooler than that).

holy mother of god........ have you seen the prices of lexmark print cartridges?

I have more computers than is strictly healthy.
